The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office operates the only adult detention facility for pretrial detainees within Washoe County. The Washoe County Detention Facility currently accepts detainees from over thirty law enforcement agencies, including those at the local, state and federal levels.
The average daily inmate population level in 2017 was 1085 inmates. The Sheriff’s Office continues to strive to reduce the inmate population with innovative and proactive inmate release programs. These programs include court-sponsored pretrial releases and community-based work programs which are coordinated through the Sheriff’s Office.
The facility includes housing units for inmates with special needs. These units help treat those inmates with special needs who cannot, or should not, be housed in general population. These units are staffed with Mental Health workers and Sheriff’s Deputies who have received specialized Crisis Intervention Training.
As part of its services, the jail provides daily transportation for inmates to the Washoe County District Courts, the Reno and Sparks Justice and Municipal Courts.

Reno Justice Court is a court of limited jurisdiction and is divided into three (3) main areas; the Citation Division, the Civil Division and the Criminal Division. The Criminal Division deals with cases which are being prosecuted by the Washoe County District Attorney`s Office (or the State of Nevada Attorney General`s Office in certain cases). All criminal proceedings in Reno Township, whether misdemeanor, gross misdemeanor or felony cases originate in Reno Justice Court. A preliminary examination is held in gross misdemeanor and felony cases and, upon a finding of probable cause by the judge, the case is forwarded to the Second Judicial District Court for adjudication. Reno Justice Court is the trial court in misdemeanor cases.

Within 24 hours, all inmates are interviewed for an Own Recognizance release by Pretrial Services. If granted, the inmate will be released without the need for bail. If the release is not granted, bail will be set for the inmate or the inmate will be held without bail until seen by the court.
